Primitive Reflexes and why it matters?

A newborn does not need to learn to startle, suck, grasp, or turn toward touch. These movements are already wired into the nervous system before birth, giving the body its first tools for survival, bonding, and movement. These early patterns are called primitive reflexes. They begin in utero and are responsible for laying the groundwork for later skills like rolling, crawling, walking, writing, balance, and emotional regulation.
Think of reflexes as the OG. The nervous system runs on them until it learns to use them as a foundation for other skills. Think of this as the "upgrade". This "upgrade" is called reflex integration. So integration does not mean the nervous system erases them. Instead, the body gains choice. A baby who startles automatically becomes a child who can orient, steady, and respond. A grasping hand becomes a hand that can release, point, draw, and write. A head-turning reflex becomes part of mature visual tracking and cross-body coordination.
When this integration is incomplete, or when stress or trauma reactivates old patterns, these reflexes can affect daily life in subtle ways. It may show up as poor coordination, neck tension, sound sensitivity, anxiety, difficulty focusing, messy handwriting, clumsiness, motion sensitivity, or a strong startle response. Basically when reflexes do not integrate well, the body may keep using an early survival pattern long after it is useful.

Why retained reflexes can affect the whole person
A retained primitive reflex is not simply a “baby reflex that stayed.” It can influence how the nervous system organizes posture, movement, sensory input, and stress responses.
The effects may be physical, emotional, or both.
A child with a retained Palmar Grasp may press too hard when writing, tire quickly, or avoid fine motor tasks. A retained Asymmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex may make it harder to cross the midline of the body, which can affect reading, handwriting, ball sports, and bike riding. A retained Tonic Labyrinthine Reflex may influence balance, muscle tone, and posture.
A retained reflex can create a kind of background effort. The person may complete daily tasks, but with more strain than expected. Sitting still, copying from a board, catching a ball, driving in traffic, or working under fluorescent lights may take extra energy.
Integration can free up that energy. When the nervous system no longer has to compensate for an old reflex pattern, movement often becomes smoother and attention may feel easier to maintain.
Stress, trauma, and birth experiences can influence integration
Stress and trauma matter because primitive reflexes are tied to survival. When the nervous system senses threat, it may return to older patterns that are fast and protective. This can happen after a single major event or after long periods of chronic stress.
For children, retained reflexes may be connected with early medical procedures, difficult births, limited tummy time, delayed movement milestones, or high stress in the environment etc.
How to integrate reflexes?
There are many modalities that we use to help these reflexes integrate. One of the modalities that I enjoy using is the Rhythmic Movement Therapy. RMTi uses gentle, developmental movements to support the nervous system. The movements are based on the natural rhythms babies use as they grow, such as rocking, rolling, head turning, and whole-body rhythmic motion.
The approach is usually slow, precise, and non-forceful. Some movements are passive, where a practitioner gently moves the body. Others are active, where the person performs the movement independently. The goal is to give the brain and body a chance to revisit early movement patterns in a safe and organized way.
The reason why I enjoy using RMTi is because the kids enjoy them! When they enjoy them, they keep doing them! The best results often come from consistency. Short, regular movement gives the nervous system repeated information: this is safe, this is organized, this can be easier.
The kids who have their reflexes integrated often report that they feel more at home in their bodies, things seem easier to do, less draining to complete, and overall feel steadier, calmer, and more capable of adapting.

It is important to know that primitive reflexes are not the issues. They protect us. They help babies enter the world, feed, bond, move, and begin the long process of becoming coordinated, steady, and self-directed. It is only when these reflexes remain active or become reactivated by stress, trauma, or other life events such as sickness, they become our stumbling block. However we can work to integrate them again!
